In response to the firing of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, national security expert and co-founder and president of the Rainey Center, Bishop Garrison, has the following statement:
“This administration is willing to risk everything – including the domestic safety of American citizens - in order to gain political points with its base. Having no permanent leadership in the top three positions at the Department of Homeland Security, no permanent Director of the Secret Service and no permanent Secretary of Defense — all at the same time — does exactly that.
“These individuals serve at the pleasure of the President. But there’s a reason the Constitution calls for the advice and consent of the Senate. To have no Senators from either side of the aisle aware of these drastic decisions before they were announced is a grave mistake. It places our national security apparatus in an extremely compromised position."
Bishop Garrison graduated from West Point in 2002, served two deployments in Iraq in the Army, and is a 2010 graduate of William and Mary Law. He served in national security positions in the Obama administration, including as White House Liaison at the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security. He also served as deputy foreign policy Adviser on the Clinton campaign.
