COMMENTARY: Retain process for wind farm approval near bases

By Rainey Center

Rainey Center co-founders Bishop Garrison and Sarah Hunt have co-authored an op-ed in the San Antonio Express-News this morning in response to recent objections about building wind farms near military bases.

As the op-ed notes, "[t]he Department of Defense reviews every wind project built near a military base, and no wind project has ever been built over its objections."

DOD's detailed review and oversight process includes ensuring that a neighboring wind farm would not harm "military readiness or operations, including radars, flight operations, research, development, testing, evaluation and training activities."

Renewable energy sources bring other benefits as well; Bishop and Sarah note that Fort Hood saved an estimated $1.5 million in 2017 alone.
